Victorian Coach house

CBD remodeled a neglected 19th Century coach house in Highgate, attached to a large Victorian property.

Restoring elements of its unusual original features, we created a unique four bedroom contemporary home for a young family, forming a range of spaces for entertaining, working and playing. CBD focused on the important relationship between the inside family space and newly landscaped garden, the juxtaposition of different materials, and interplay between old and new.

We saw the project through from concept design, planning, technical design, tender and construction through to completion. Fitted furniture design for the whole house was integral to the project.

Our priority was to gain floor area without losing the qualities of an original Victorian working building in a conservation area. Despite requiring near complete demolition, we achieved this by taking a mindful approach to dismantling and a careful grafting of the new elements. A completely new layout was created linked to the staggered landings of a feature staircase. An additional zinc-clad extension was built against the rear brickwork, lightweight and distinct from the rest of the building with large glazed openings looking over the private south facing garden.

This was a fantastic project and rare chance to take an unused, pinched and delapidated garage and convert it into a spacious, open-plan, light filled home that is full of character.
